My 10 year old daughter is one of many people living with a disease she didn’t choose. She did not get Type 1 diabetes from a poor diet, lack of exercise or from eating too much sugar. In all likelihood, an unknown trigger or virus caused her autoimmune system to attack itself. In the process, her insulin producing beta cells died. Her body no longer produces any insulin.
Everybody needs insulin to survive. Insulin breaks down the carbohydrates in the foods we eat to fuel our bodies. Everyone needs to eat a well-balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains. Everyone needs to eat in moderation, practice portion control, and get plenty of exercise.
Since Hannah’s diagnosis on August 21, 2008, we have learned just how important a role exercise plays in maintaining good glucose control. For her, it is a careful balance of food intake, insulin dosage and activity level to stay strong and healthy.
Even with our diligence, treating and managing Type 1 Diabetes is challenging. Our greatest desire is for a cure to be found. That is why we walk every year for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF is the largest charitable funder of research to find a cure and improve the daily quality of life for diabetics.
Just weeks after Hannah’s diagnosis back in 2008, my co-worker, Jennifer Thorvaldson formed a team to walk in her honor and Team Todd & Moore was born. In three years, Team Todd & Moore has raised over $23,000 for research. Each year our team has grown with family and friends participating and helping raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and funds to find a cure.
We invite you to join us on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at the Colonial Life Arena parking lot. Registration begins at 12:30 pm and the 3 mile walk through the USC Campus will start at 2:00 pm. To join our team, click on:
