I was practically raised at a baseball field. My earliest memories involve many days and evenings spent at Collyar Park in Laurens, SC or Legion Field in Greenwood, SC. My father, Larry Gar, was president of the Dixie Youth Baseball program in our hometown for many years and was the “Voice” of the Greenwood Braves during the 70’s. We lived at the baseball field.
I met my husband Sam while completing an internship with the Columbia Mets (NY Mets single A team) in the early 80’s. We witnessed the Mets clinch the 1986 World Series in person just one week after our wedding. We have spent countless hours at baseball fields over the last 25 years watching our son Ryan, two nephews, and friend’s kids play the greatest game on dirt. We love baseball at our house.
I learned early on from my dad that “It ain’t over, ‘til it’s over!” and that you stay until the last out. In baseball, anything can happen. And that anything for the Gamecock Nation has come in Back 2 Back College World Series Championships.
Many thought it couldn’t be done this year by a Gamecock team riddled by injuries and setbacks. Some thought it was improbable, but not impossible. And some of us just believed if any team could do it, it was this special group of young men and a coaching staff that knew how to win anyway. Game after game they wowed us with spectacular plays, getting out of bases loaded jams, and making all the right moves to bring home a second National Championship.
They wowed us by continuing to play “Baylorball” in memory of Baylor Teal who taught them how to battle both on and off the field in his fight against cancer. They have brought our state, university and local economy much joy and prosperity by playing a game they love and playing it very well.
At Todd & Moore, we are still savoring the victories and the boost to our business. We are very thankful for being in the heart of a college town where fans love their Gamecocks and wear their colors proudly. So stop in soon for new Gamecock apparel and accessories for College Colors Day on Friday, September 2. Even though football is just around the corner, we’ll still talk baseball with you. It never gets old.
Take me out to the ball field,
Beth
