Another exciting recreational soccer season is upon us! Have you registered your child/children yet? Registration is going on now for most of the area leagues and ends this month. Just to name a few - South Carolina United FC YMCA League, Lexington County Soccer Club, Lexington County Girls Soccer Association, SOAR, West Metro Soccer Club and Irmo Chapin Recreation.
My son, Tristan, started playing when he was 4 years old at the Lexington YMCA and this will be our 8th season with them. My husband coaches his team and we have been very fortunate to have some of the same players for the past several seasons. We have become friends with the parents and the kids have formed some lifelong friendships with each other. The soccer field has become a part of our lives.
Growing up, my brother and I never participated in any kind of recreational league sports. I was enrolled in dance - and there was that one unfortunate year I had to take gymnastics after my brother signed up and then backed out at the last minute. Not wanting to lose the fees she paid, my mother insisted I take the class. Thanks little brother! But neither dance nor gymnastics could have prepared me for soccer.
I sure am glad that I work with a lot of sports-minded people! They really helped me navigate the world of recreational soccer when we first started out with my son. My friend and co-worker, Beth McCrary, walked me through everything to expect from how to outfit my child to being a team mom to what to bring with me to the field. I would have been lost without her that first season!
We have come a long way in the soccer world. We have watched Tristan grow from freezing on the soccer field in fear to a well-seasoned competitive athlete. I have even dared to be the team mom for two seasons!
I am so lucky to work at Todd & Moore where I am able to get EVERYTHING I need for my son’s soccer season – advice, shorts, socks, cleats, shin guards, soccer ball, practice goal and even Sweet Spots! Have you ever heard of Sweet Spots? They are only the best thing ever invented for soccer cleats! They fit around the shoe to hold the laces – a must for young players who are always having their shoes come untied during practices and games! I can’t tell you how many times the game has to stop for someone to tie shoe laces!
So come see us to get your child outfitted for this soccer season! And don’t forget your cooler, chair or blanket for the field – we have those too!
From one soccer mom to another,
Jennifer
