Hannah's Hope For A Cure

On Sunday, October 30th, Team Todd & Moore will be walking in the annual JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes. We will be walking in honor of my daughter, Hannah, who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since August 21, 2008.

We walk not only for Hannah, but for the many other people living with a disease they did not choose. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can strike any one at any time. It is not caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, or from eating too much sugar. In all likelihood it is caused by an unknown trigger such as a virus or an environmental trigger.

Type 1 Diabetics are insulin dependent because their bodies no longer produce the insulin needed to break down carbohydrates in food to fuel their bodies. They must receive it by multiple daily injections or through an insulin pump. Insulin is not a cure, it is what keeps a type 1 diabetic alive.

There is no outgrowing Type 1 Diabetes and it never gives a break to the people living with it. Along with insulin therapy, a diabetic must check their blood sugar 6-8 times a day, monitor the amount of carbohydrates in the food they eat and take into consideration their activity level before administering insulin.

Our greatest hope for a cure is in the research being funded by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The 3 mile walk through the beautiful USC Campus begins at 1:30 pm on Lincoln Street by the Colonial Life Arena.
