Gifts that keep on giving...

Including today, there are 12 more shopping days until Christmas Day. If you are like me, you still have shopping left to do. I’ve never understood the folks that have their shopping done prior to Thanksgiving. For me, part of the fun is getting out during the month of December to make my gift selections. By then, stores are decorated, Christmas music is playing, and some of the local merchants serve refreshments. Now that’s my kind of shopping!

I have a very practical way of thinking when it comes to give gifting. I like to give gifts that keep on giving long after the day they are opened. Many things fall into this category, especially athletic apparel, equipment, shoes, and accessories. All of these items encourage people to get up and get moving. I consider this to be one of the greatest gifts you can give and receive. Being active and striving for physical fitness improves quality of life which is a gift in and of itself.

Running shoes for example, keep on giving long after their original purpose. A runner can get approximately 6-8 months out of a pair of running shoes depending on how many miles they run a week. Then they become a great pair of comfy shoes to kick around in before becoming mud run or yard shoes. They can even be donated for the soles to be ground up for soft surfaces on playgrounds.

Tennis rackets, baseball bats, and football shoulder pads are all examples of equipment that can be passed down when outgrown or the recipient upgrades to a newer model. These items can be donated to recreation programs, daycares, and summer camps. And they all help complete a great Halloween costume!

Gym clothes are not just for the gym anymore. Most athletic apparel is now suitable for streetwear which means it easily transitions from gym to everyday activities. Gone are the days of basic black, white, navy, and oxford grey for workout clothes. The fabrics, colors, and styles are now endless and very fashion forward.
