All Fitness Levels Welcome

I’ve just returned from a run over the Lake Murray Dam in beautiful 74 degree weather. It truly dawned on me that we have a little piece of heaven right here in the Midlands. I can’t think of a local setting more beautiful and convenient to get out and enjoy fresh air and sunshine.

The walkway provided by SCE & G over the Lake Murray Dam is a great place to walk, run, or bike (lane provided) and the beauty is…ALL FITNESS LEVELS ARE WELCOME!

Whether you are just beginning a walking or running program or you have been at it for years, the 1.7 (one way) walkway allows people of all fitness levels a convenient and safe place to exercise. There is ample parking on either the Lexington or Irmo side of the dam. Both sides offer a water fountain and only the Irmo side has a public restroom. I just noticed today newly installed emergency call buttons! The view of Lake Murray is not too shabby.

I highly recommend running or walking the dam early in the morning or evening as these are the most peaceful and serene times to take in the view. I also highly recommend the proper shoes and apparel. Okay, you had to know that was coming!

It really is important to invest in proper-fitting walking or running shoes and apparel to have a good exercise experience. I see so many folks at the dam wearing “street” shoes and clothes. Sadly, their first attempt at walking the dam may be their last because walking 1.7 miles in the wrong shoes equals hurting feet. I also see many women running that are not wearing sports bras with proper support. That has got to be even more painful!
